After a 12-Year Journey, Feature Film ‘Von Cosel’ Breathes Life Into a Macabre True Story Through AI-Assisted Filmmaking
Filmmaker Ronni Thomas utilizes emerging technology to bypass traditional Hollywood roadblocks, delivering a full-length narrative on the infamous 1930s Key West case.
[BROOKLYN, NY] — [March 27, 2026] — After more than a decade in development, independent filmmaker Ronni Thomas has officially completed Von Cosel, a feature-length narrative film based on one of the most unsettling true stories in American history. The project was finally realized utilizing a hybrid AI-assisted production process, allowing the film to move forward after years of stalled attempts through traditional industry avenues.
Set in the quirky backdrop of 1930s Key West, Von Cosel explores the strange real-life story of Carl Tanzler. Tanzler’s obsessive, dark, and romantic attachment to a young tuberculosis patient led to a shocking series of events that remains one of the most controversial and macabre cases of the 20th century.
Standing apart from the short-form or experimental video art typically associated with artificial intelligence, Von Cosel was developed and executed as a complete, traditional narrative feature. It was produced using a seamless combination of conventional filmmaking techniques and emerging AI tools. Rather than replacing human craft, the technology acted as an equalizer, allowing Thomas to execute a long-conceived, period-accurate vision that had previously been financially and logistically out of reach for an independent production.
“While AI certainly has the potential to uproot and destabilize some aspects of the industry, it is also a powerful tool for those of us who are struggling to have our stories told,” said Thomas. “This process didn't replace the art of filmmaking; it allowed a project that was trapped in development hell to finally exist.”
The project arrives amid the ongoing, passionate debate within the film industry regarding AI’s role in creative production. Von Cosel positions itself not just as a compelling piece of historical cinema, but as a groundbreaking case study in how independent filmmakers are practically navigating and harnessing these tools to democratize the medium.
Von Cosel is currently seeking festival premieres and distribution partners.Trailer, press screener, and interviews with director Ronni Thomas are available upon request.
